1. Overview
My Guitar Academy is committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020 (New Zealand). This policy explains what personal information we collect when you enrol in our courses or use our website, why we collect it, how we store it, and what rights you have over it.
2. What Information We Collect
When you enrol or enquire with us, we may collect:
- Full name, date of birth, and (where applicable) parent or guardian's name
- Contact details | email address, mobile number, WhatsApp number, and home address
- Course and payment information | selected package, batch preferences, and payment confirmation (processed securely via Shopify's payment system; we do not store your full card details)
- Communications you send us via our contact form, email, or WhatsApp
- Basic website usage data (pages visited, approximate location for currency and regional content purposes) collected via cookies | see our Cookie Policy
3. Why We Collect It
We use your personal information to:
- Process your enrolment and deliver the course or classes you've purchased
- Communicate with you about your booking, batch schedule, and any changes to your classes
- Process payments securely through our website
- Show you accurate pricing and location-relevant content (for example, showing Auckland in-person classes to visitors located in New Zealand)
- Respond to enquiries sent through our contact form or WhatsApp
- Meet our legal and regulatory obligations
We do not use your personal information for any purpose beyond what is reasonably necessary to provide our services, unless you've given us clear consent to do otherwise (for example, opting in to receive marketing updates).
4. How We Store Your Information
Your information is stored securely on Shopify's hosting infrastructure, which maintains industry-standard security certifications. We retain your enrolment information for as long as reasonably necessary to deliver our services and meet our legal obligations (such as financial record-keeping), after which it is securely deleted or anonymised.
5. Sharing Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We only share it with:
- Shopify | our e-commerce and payment processing platform, which handles checkout and payment securely on our behalf
- Service providers who help us run the website (such as email or analytics providers), only to the extent necessary for them to perform their function
- Authorities, where required by law
6. Your Rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to:
- Ask us what personal information we hold about you
- Request a correction to any information that is inaccurate or out of date
- Request that we delete your personal information, subject to our legal obligation to retain certain records
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details at the bottom of this page. We will respond within a reasonable time, generally within 20 working days as required by law.
7. Cookies
Our website uses cookies for essential functionality (such as checkout) and, where enabled, analytics to understand how visitors use our site. Full detail is available in our Cookie Policy.
8. Children's Information
Many of our students are enrolled by a parent or guardian. Where a student is under 18, we collect the parent or guardian's name and contact details alongside the student's, and we treat communications regarding that enrolment as directed to the parent or guardian.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "last updated" date above.
